Was 'invited' to interview for the unfilled spot at Maimonides this am. Evidently they've been sorting through applications for the last few days...I didn't even realize the scramble was still going on. Obviously thrilled to have the opportunity to still match into ortho this year.

Please PM me if you matched at Maimodes this year, or even if you just interviewed there. I didn't look at Brooklyn so I don't know anything about the program other than what's on the website. Would love to get info from anyone who's met the residents, faculty, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I also received a call from Maimonides. Don't know anything about them. Would be interested in all information - good and bad. Any real red flags - like why they didn't fill? Thanks.

They didn't fill cause they were to cocky and didn't rank all the students they interviewed.

Has anyone invited to interview for the Maimo position signed contracts elsewhere for next year? Is this something that the programs can see, or put another way, did I take myself out of the running at Maimo by scrambling into a gen surg prelim?

Supposedly all interviews have been offered.

What someone might say are Red Flags by the grapevine:

-1 out of 2 residents will take a 6 year track and do research. If none of the 2 want to do it, it's drawing straws.

-No Foot and Ankle guy.

-I think less Op experience than you'd expect from community programs.

To some, these may not be red flags. I would be LOVE to match at Maimonides! Even if I had interviewed there to begin with, from what I know thus far about the program, it would have been up there in the rankings.

basically i think the program is cool. I interviewed there, ranked it 4 but matched higher up. They had only interviewed about 20 people total for 2 spots, which is relatively good odds for the applicant (i remember UF doing 90 interviews for 3 spots).

anyways, i think their research "suprise" is not too pleasant- plus you take q4 call as research guy- which is rather frequent for research years...
-- i think they have a few lacking specialties, foot, tumor is sketchy, trauma is away (which is almost unforgiveable if you are playing the community program presentation).
--They send you away for at least trauma - to U Conn (i think) they, may also send you away for peds.
--I don't think the interview was Malignant at all-- BUT, it was the most malignant i have ever been on. Meaning, they pimped you on fracture stuff, ethics stuff, nit-picked your personal stuff. I didn't sweat it, but i can understand, especially compared to other places, without the above mentioned deficiencies, why they didn't fill.
-- my impression of the research year, is that you do the spine attendings research. the lab they showed us was dusty, and had an old 486 computer and a couple beakers.... IE not a real lab.... the residents didn't even know where it was... they got lost, during the tour

Again, i sincerely think the program is sweet. THeir ER call is not hand pus, osteo, etc. stuff that gets to be really painful. they get fractures and interesting, operative orthopaedics in the ER. The residents were nice, it is in NYC, the attendings were also pretty reasonable. They do get to operate earlier than most academic places, although probably not as frequently as the more 'community' community programs

I would not hesitate to matriculate to this program at all- i was fortunate to match higher up, but found this place much more preferable than some other places i interviewed at...

They told me Friday (the 18th), but that has now come and gone and I haven't heard, probably a bad sign.
