Here are two articles that were published recently in JBJS (2012) addressing the current issues of women in orthopaedics. One describes trends in the number of female orthopaedic surgeons and includes and interesting discussion of possible contributing factors. The other compares the number of female residents at every U.S. accredited residency program over a period of 5 years (2004/5-2008/9).

Women in Orthopaedics—Way Behind the Number Curve:

The Uneven Distribution of Women in Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Training Programs in the United States]www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22258016[/url]

Thoughts are welcome.

I'm a MS3 and interested in applying to Ortho. I'm interested in a community program and would like some advice on places to apply and how women applicants were viewed and what your experiences were like. Any women in Ortho residencies can share their experiences and what some of the pro's and cons are from a female perspective would be great! Thanks!!
