Position: Clinical Research Coordinator for the Orthopaedic Spine Service at Massachusetts General Hospital

The applicant should have a strong academic record, must be creative, self-driven, reliable, and motivated to learn. An applicant must be comfortable working and speaking with patients in the clinical setting. In addition, applicants should have the capacity to learn and perform variety of research responsibilities. The position offers the opportunity for education and hands-on learning in the medical field.

The Clinical Research Coordinator will work closely with Dr. Kirkham B. Wood, Dr. Joseph Schwab, Dr. Thomas Cha, and many Orthopaedic Spine and Orthopaedic Oncology Fellows. A typical week consists of 1-2 day in the OR collecting specimens. Surgical cases include tumor excision from around the axial skeleton, spinal fusion, discectomy, laminectomy, and a variety of reconstructions. The remainder of the week is spent in the clinic and office. The research coordinator will have strong clinical duties in administering Health Related Quality of Life surveys to patients in the clinic as well as consenting patient for various studies. Other tasks include involvement in research design, implementation and data collection, gaining experience in numerous aspects of clinical research including IRB communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Screening and consenting patients for research studies in the clinic
  • Administering Health-Related Quality of Life surveys to patients in the clinic
  • Reviewing patient charts to gather radiographic, operative, and clinical data
  • Gathering references and images to edit and format research papers
  • Drafting IRB (Institutional Review Board) documentation for research studies
  • Supporting physicians in tasks associated with project development, implementation, data collection, manuscript preparation, and presentation.
  • Managing databases, including data exportation and manipulation as well as online survey and database development.
