Who: The Division of 2023 Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity is seeking highly qualified 3rd or 4th year US medical students who are interested in a year-long clinical research fellowship to augment their orthopaedic surgery residency application and provide a solid foundation for a future career in academic orthopaedics. Note: The program will also review applications from outstanding baccalaureate graduates seeking to improve their research experience prior to a medical school application.


Duration: 12-months (with a possibility of a second year)
Compensation: $30,000 stipend
Where: Grady Memorial Hospital/Emory University School of Medicine. 

When: Approx. start July. Some flexibility on a case-by-case basis.

You will join our group of 2 full-time fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons. You will work in close collaboration with our full-time research staff and under the direction of Hand & Upper Extremity surgeons as well as spine surgeons.


Duties of the Research Fellow Include:
-Management of enrollment and follow-up of patients in clinical trials
-Collaboration with orthopaedic residents, fellows, and attendings on retrospective projects
-Submission of protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
-Basic statistical analysis of data
-Drafting and submitting abstracts and manuscripts to conferences and journals (e.g., JBJS, JAAOS, CORR)


Goals/Opportunities:
-Strengthen your orthopaedic surgery residency application
-Participate in weekly mentorship and research education meetings with academic orthopaedic hand surgeons
-Conduct crucial portions of large, multicenter clinical trials
-Fellows should expect at least 5-10 publications and abstract submissions depending on the individual’s motivation and work ethic
-Opportunities to present research abstracts at major orthopaedic conferences
-Networking opportunities with residents, fellows, and attendings
-Ample opportunities to attend all surgical educational activities: Daily Orthopaedic Hand Rounds, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Orthopaedic Conferences, Morbidity & Mortality Conferences, Journal Club, Cadaver Labs, and Surgical Skills Labs
-Numerous opportunities to observe surgical procedures
