Research Assistant Professor – Orthopedics and Osseointegration

The Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado is seeking the ideal candidate to collaboratively direct clinical and wet bench research for the Osseointegration Research Program.   Work will include human subjects research and all regulatory aspects to human protocol development, in vitro and in vivo experimental planning, execution of molecular, cellular and animal model-based experiments, and general oversight of clinical and basic lab operations.  This position will be supervised by Dr. Jason W. Stoneback, MD; Associate Professor, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Chief of the Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery section and Director of the Limb Restoration Program.

This position will also be responsible for the oversight and supervision of two Research Professionals and one Research Resident

Examples of Work Performed

  • Development of human potocols for submission to the COMIRB
  • Completion of any FDA-level regulatory steps, including development of IDE/IND applications
  • Contribution to recruitment and consenting of participants to human studies and execution of outcome measure assessments in this context
  • Collection and banking of human tissues collected from various limb restoration procedures
  • Planning and performing laboratory experiments, including in vitro and in vivo work
  • Management of rodent and other animal colonies as needed
  • Performance of surgical procedures in animal models of limb restoration and osseointegration
  • Performing various assays including Western and Northern blots, real-time qPCR, flow cytometry, ELISAs, and microarrays, histological staining/immunostaining, procedures with animal models, and imaging and data analysis
  • Oversee all lab activities, including ordering of supplies and record keeping

Qualifications - External

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Interest in limb restoration and the biology of implant osseointegration in the context of limb amputation
  • Organizational skills, knowledge base, independence and leadership skills to support running the newly formed osseointegration laboratory
  • Communication skills and evidence of writing ability based on publication track record
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills in bench science (in vitro, in vivo)
  • Comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team

 

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD degree in a biological sciences field, or an MD degree
  • 3 years of postdoctoral experience post-completion of the terminal degree
  • Evidence of publication and presentation track record from work on previous projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record of research in musculoskeletal biology
  • Experience studying implant-bone interface and developing biological and engineering based approaches to enhancing integration at this interface
  • Grant writing experience and willingness to contribute to grant writing as part of an investigative team
