The Rothman Opioid Foundsation is seeking
A full-time Foundation Fellow for 1 year (June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2024), who is passionate and committed to a career in orthopaedics, medicine, and/or public health policy. Please note:
- - Start and end dates can be flexible.
- - Will be primarily remote but with regular in person coordination.
Compensation:
$39,000 stipend for the year, without benefits.
Eligibility:
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must have completed an undergraduate degree.
Preference will be given to medical students or recent medical graduates.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate and support new and ongoing educational and advocacy projects.
Track, coordinate, write, edit, and submit ongoing research.
Organize and execute new research trials.
Support grant program execution and reporting.
Facilitate meetings and events.
Manage and mentor student researchers.
Skills:
Strong communication skills and work ethic, with reliable responsive.
Comfortable working with and leading a small team of medical students
Strong writing and editing skills
Strong organizational skills
Google Doc/Sheets skills
Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint skills
Active Areas of Research:
Medical cannabis utilization for pain management
Peri-operative pain management strategy
Opioid prescribing practices by various specialties
Efficacy of opioid prescribing education
Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) analysis
Public health research related to opioid death rates

Dr. Ilyas is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute specializing in hand surgery & orthopaedic trauma surgery, who has long championed innovative pain management strategies to minimize patient opioid consumption and abuse. Prior to presiding over the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Foundation for Opioid Research & Education, Dr. Ilyas served as the President of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society. In his role as a member of the leadership of Rothman Orthopaedics, Dr. Ilyas was charged with developing evidenced-based opioid-prescribing strategies for the practice’s providers as well as patient education. In addition, Dr. Ilyas is an award-winning researcher in the area of surgical pain management. Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Ilyas holds a busy teaching schedule as well serving as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Fellowship Program Director at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University as well as most recently serving as an Associate Dean at the Drexel University College of Medicine.
