The division of orthopaedic trauma at Indiana University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is looking for a highly motivated medical student to complete a yearlong research fellowship. This successful applicant will work with a team of eight orthopaedic traumatologists, four full-time research staff, statisticians, as well as orthopaedic trauma fellows and orthopaedic surgery residents to conduct high-quality orthopaedic trauma research. The division has active projects across all aspects of research from basic and translational science to retrospective clinical to prospective, single-centre to prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter studies. A successful fellow will not only play a critical role in executing ongoing research projects but will have the opportunity to develop his/her own ideas. Regular meetings with faculty will help develop the fellow’s research acumen and serve as the beginning of life-long mentorship to develop orthopaedic surgeon-scientists.

Who: Current medical students who are committed to a career in orthopaedic surgery. Ideal timing is between MS3 and MS4 years, however qualified candidates at other time points will be considered.

When: Beginning May-June 2023

Duration: 1 year

Salary: $30,000 scholarship

Where: Indiana University Methodist Hospital, a level 1 trauma center in Indianapolis, IN

Structure: Research fellow will attend daily morning sign-out conference. Most of the time will be dedicated to research activities; however, the organized and efficient candidate may be afforded clinic and operating room exposure as able. Research fellow will participate in all didactic conferences, cadaver labs, journal clubs, and other educational opportunities.
