This is a competitive research fellowship that is awarded to one (1) applicant with a strong interest in orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, or hand surgery, who is a competitive candidate for those clinical training programs. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated, organized, and responsible individual to enhance their research experience across a broad portfolio of clinical research, and ultimately build an impressive CV for clinical training applications.

This fellow will manage 30 or more clinical research projects as well as have frequent one-on-one mentorship with two lead clinician scientists (Doctors Giladi and Means). The fellow will also have frequent but broader engagement will all the hand surgery faculty (11 orthopedic surgeons and 4 plastic surgeons, all full-time hand surgeons) at CNHC. The fellow is expected to engage in daily research work (see below), write manuscripts and book chapters, submit and present abstracts at annual meetings, as well as be able to support IRB and grant applications including gaining experience with grant writing. The complexity and extent of the fellow work is determined by the selected fellow’s level of research and clinical experience.

Specific project responsibilities include maintaining prospective study enrollment and follow-up, data review and collation, patient recruitment and interaction, patient interviewing, mentoring medical students through research projects, research planning and design, learning to understand data analysis and work alongside our statistician and informaticist, and manuscript/abstract/grant preparation and submission. The research fellow will be an active supporting member to our clinical fellows, our plastic and orthopedic surgical residents, as well as our research team.

For the motivated, hard-working, self-directed individual this can be a very productive fellowship. By the end of this fellowship, the selected fellow should expect to have at least 10-20 publications, with 5 or more of them as first author.

In addition to improving their research skills in a busy academic environment, the goal of the program is to have this fellow (with full-time research experience and strong letters of recommendation) match into their desired residency or clinical fellowship position. In the past, we have consistently reached this goal.

We are looking for individuals with the following prerequisites and characteristics:

  • Strong motivation for a career in Orthopedic or Plastic Surgery (hand surgery specifically not required)
    • Interest in research
  • Organization, ability to multitask, persistence, and motivation to implement the various components of a clinical study
    • Experience in clinical research (preferred, but not necessary)
    • Must be detailed oriented
  • Must be able to self-manage
    • Strong academic record

Excellent written and verbal communication (publications are a plus, but written samples of other course work are helpful)

Proficiency: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Familiarity with statistical software is preferred, but not necessary

Ability to work in a team environment and balance many competing priorities and projects

Ability to gather and interpret moderately complex data
