The University of Minnesota Orthopaedic Trauma Research Fellowship will be available starting in the spring of 2024. This two-year fellowship opportunity for medical school graduates is a benefits eligible, funded position working with Peter A. Cole, MD in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN and the greater NorthStar Trauma Network. The individual in this position will be working in-person-on-site.

 This position focuses on orthopaedic trauma research, specializing in complex shoulder girdle and chest wall pathology as well as other key subspecialty themes. Additional emphasis is placed on the use of medical technology, 3D printing and patient reported outcomes in our research. The individual in this role will be responsible for initiating, researching, and publishing results from multiple simultaneous studies and will work as a primary member of our team to insure success.

 Our program has matched 12 of 13 past fellows to orthopaedic residency. Published program results can be viewed at here.  This position is for candidates who desire to enter orthopaedic residency and offers many unique opportunities including:

  • Two half-days in clinic each week with direct patient care
  • Shadowing in OR and during on-call shifts
  • Taking intraoperative photographs/videos
  • Attending Fracture Conferences, Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, and facilitating engagement with residents and other faculty
  • Support for travel to conferences to present research projects

 

Additional desired (though not required) qualifications include a background or experience in any of the following areas:

  • 3D Printing
  • Engineering
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Medical Technology
  • Media Arts
