HotThe Department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina seeks a dynamic medical or pre-medical student for a year-long research fellowship with the Foot and Ankle Service. This unique opportunity offers collaboration with two board-certified, fellowship-trained Foot and Ankle surgeons with extensive experience in producing impactful research. The chosen candidate will gain exposure to the clinical, operative, and academic aspects of medicine through both prospective and retrospective research studies. Research focus areas encompass total ankle arthroplasty, diabetic foot, gait and biomechanics, utilization of large publicly available databases, surgical outcomes assessment, and artificial intelligence (AI). The ideal applicant should possess a robust academic background, coupled with creativity, self-motivation, reliability, and a strong desire for learning. A successful applicant will be highly motivated with prior experience in conceptualizing and executing clinical or basic science research. Proficiency in statistical analysis is highly advantageous for this role.
Location: Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC
Duration: 1 year, starting in June/July

Guideline and Supervision:
Research assistants will work closely Dr. Gross, Dr. Scott, and our MUSC Orthopaedic Surgery Residents.
Job Duties of the Researcher Will Include:
Completing data analysis and manuscript preparation for scientific publication. Complete corrections and suggestions from scientific publication editors. 25>#/p###
Recruiting patients and collecting data for research studies. Attend clinic with supporting physicians and program coordinator to help consent study candidates and collect study data. 25>#/p###
Supporting physicians with ongoing studies, projects, videos, papers and presentations. Give guidance and support for Orthopaedic residents on ongoing orthopaedic studies. 15>#/p###
Gathering patient images, X-rays, as well as operative and clinical notes and videos. Attend surgery cases to video cases at the direction of the surgeon. Upload CT scans for software preparation for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty cases. 10>#/p###
Assembling surgeon’s presentations and case reports. Create and submit presentations for Orthopaedics organizations. Prepare information for supporting surgeons’ cases for presentation at weekly shoulder conference. 10>#/p###
Drafting grant proposals for internal and extramural funding announcements. Complete information in clinialresearch.org and other research databases. 10>#/p###
Drafting Institutional Review Board documentation for research studies. Drafting of protocols for new research studies with the guidance of supporting physicians. 5>#/p###
MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
A high school diploma and two years clerical or paraprofessional experience involving the compilation of data and statistics. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.
- Enthusiasm to learn aspects of clinical research and further their clinical knowledge of foot and ankle pathologies,
- Must be organized, detail oriented, highly motivated, and work well with others.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis and programs (SPSS, etc.) is preferred but not required,
