Dr. Matthew Colman is seeking a bright, ambitious, and hard-working medical student interested in pursuing a full-time clinical research fellowship at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush between the third and fourth year of medical school. Dr. Colman is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush and is dual specialized in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery and Oncology, providing the fellow with the unique opportunity to learn and conduct research in both subspecialties. Fellows will also have extensive opportunities for publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences. The fellow is welcome to attend Spine and Oncology conferences, with the opportunity to learn directly from residents, fellows, and attendings within the department.

Positions Available: 1

Position Title: Clinical Research Coordinator

Duration: 1 Year 

Candidates: US Medical Students between M3/M4 interested in Orthopedic Surgery.

Location: Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center, Division of Spine Surgery and Musculoskeletal Oncology, Chicago, IL.

Start Date: Beginning May/June 2024

Salary: Monthly stipend provided

 

Research Fellow Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of all prospective, retrospective, and biomechanical studies
  • Consenting of study patients following good clinical and ethical practice
  • Submission of study protocols to the Rush Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Statistical analysis of data
  • Manuscript writing, editing, and submission
  • Oversight of research assistants

Prerequisites and Characteristics for consideration:

  • Strong motivation to pursue a career in Orthopaedic surgery
  • Proven interest in research
  • Strong academic record
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented
  • Knowledge of statistical principles and familiarity with statistical software (SPSS, STATA, R, others)

  • The fellow should expect to publish 20+ publications by the end of the research year, with the opportunity for more through collaboration with other teams in the departments.
  • The opportunity to personally present many abstracts as posters/podium presentations at national and international Spine and Oncology conferences.

  • Opportunities to attend Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Spine Conferences, Oncology Conferences, Journal Clubs, and Cadaver Labs.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with Spine fellows, orthopaedic residents, and other attendings at Rush.
  • Dr. Colman expects candidates to be strong applicants in the Orthopaedic Surgery match and will help the candidate during the application process.
