University of Kentucky Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Funded Research Fellowship (2025-2026)
HotDr. Stone specializes in conditions of the shoulder, elbow, and knee, with an additional practice focus in cartilage restoration and ortho-biologics. He serves as the director for the Center for Cartilage Repair and Restoration at the University of Kentucky. He is also the team physician for the University of Kentucky, the Lexington Sporting Club, and Eastern Kentucky University.
Position: Research Fellow
Who: US medical students between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school
VISA: Unable to be provided
Number of Available Positions: 2
Duration: 1 year (approximately June 2025 – June 2026)
Salary: A bi-monthly stipend is provided
Preceptors: Austin V. Stone, MD PhD and Caitlin Conley, PhD
Job Duties:
1. Actively participate in drafting, editing, and submitting research projects including abstracts, manuscripts, multimedia projects, and book chapters.
2. Hands-on experience collecting patient outcome and biospecimen data in both the clinical and operating room settings.
3. Submission and management of IRB protocols.
4. Assist the research coordinators and research faculty on clinical projects in the department.
5. Assist with coordinating and setting up cadaver labs for residents and fellows.
Qualifications:
1. A background in musculoskeletal disorders with a desire to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery.
2. Previous experience in academic research.
3. Driven, independent, and efficient worker.
4. Well organized with good communication skills.
5. Strong scholastic performance.
6. Statistical experience is preferred, but not required.

2. Fellows can expect to have approximately 8-10 publications by the end of the research year with diligent work.
3. Fellows have the ability to be 1st author on any paper that they significantly contribute to.
4. Ability to interact with sports medicine attendings and orthopaedic residents.
5. Ability to observe cases with Dr. Stone in the operating room.
6. Access to University of Kentucky Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, lectures, cadaveric labs, and workshops.
