programs will not knock you for not showing up to social events if you are traveling to get there etc........if they do...f#8k'em....what can u do your traveling! It is a good way to talk, socialize with residents and get a feel for the program....yes u are trying to match anywhere u can, we all where at some point. But YOU have to spend 5 years there so maybe u think all the residents are "tools" or don't "fit with them" so you want to rank them lower....the more time u spend with a progam the more you will find out good/bad. I rec going to events, attendings do show up sometimes. U may start talking with residends/attendings and really bond and they will remember you. WE ALL LOOK ALIKE ON INTERVIEW DAY SO U NEED TO STAND OUT OFF PAPER... everyone has 300+ board scores and triple AOA...we all have dark suits, good haircuts and smiles...so social events are your chance to make a good impression, maybe ur spouse can get feel for it...u should go and i encourage it. I went out drinking with residents during social events and they will remeber the fun guys/gals they talked too.....nobody wants to be with a stiff, attendings might but residents have some say too. just my thoughts. Don't get crazy drunk, i am not saying that, i am saying be social and try to have fun!
