Hey folks...I was going thru different programs' websites and put together a list of special requirements unique to certain programs during the application process...just add more stuff to this list if you get more info...

most programs want 3 LORs (1 from your program director)

Harvard - wants 4 letter of recs with 1 from a chief resident (website says doesn't have to be ortho chief resident)

Johns Hopkins - also wants 4 LORs

Univ. of Michigan - has a "voluntary ID form" to fill out on their program website

Washington Univ. - supplemental form on website for each of your LOR writers to fill out

UMDNJ (Newark) - want MCAT score, college transcript, and supplemental form (on website) for each LOR writer to fill out

NYU/HJD - in your personal statement, they want to know why you like HJD specifically

MCP/Hannemann - SAT score, MCAT score

Brown University - this is actually a 6 yr program (5 yr residency and 1 year of extra junior attending mandatory but you will be awarded a trauma fellowship according to website)

Thanks for the info guys. A guy that matched last year told me not to sweat the extra stuff too much. Other guys in his class spent hours going through every program's web page to see what they wanted. He said "screw that" though. He sent the extra stuff if he knew about it in advance. If not, he said the programs will contact you after they get your appl and will ask for any other stuff they want then. And he got plenty of top-knotch interviews. :pimp:

You can assign letters before they are uploaded. You can do this now if you want. When your dean's office receives the letters in October or whenever, they'll scan them and send them to the programs you designated.

I sent 4 ortho letters and know many others who sent 4.

For the programs with an extra LOR form like Vandy, I had my school scan in each LOR of rec twice (or more, depending on how many extra form programs you apply to), as LOR Dr. Z BASIC and LOR Dr. Z VANDY, with "VANDY" being 2 pages (the 2nd page the extra form). Then for Vandy, I selected LOR Dr. Z VANDY and every other school I selected LOR Dr. Z BASIC. It was confusing as h$%&, but the best way I could figure it out. It worked out fine. As an alternative, you could call these schools and ask if you could just fax or mail the forms separately.

Here's what I got:

UMKC - Extra form for LOR
UNC - SAT, MCAT
Okla - Add to PS why you would like Oklahoma Region
Vandy - Extra form for LOR
Baylor - Extra form for LOR

Here's a question to add on. Some of these schools mention submitting these extra LOR forms through ERAS. Anybody have a good idea about how to do that? :smokin:

I had a somewhat different experience. I'd say that the majority of places that I applied to wanted a chairman's letter. I'd venture to say around 80%. And as for not having ortho at your school. Tough luck, I guess you'll just have to do g-surg. Just kiddin'. if you don't have an ortho program, I can't imagine that you would need to have a chairman's letter.

Actually, most do NOT require a chairman's letter. I was an applicant last year, and only one program required such a letter (out of 30 applied to). I can't remember which one it was though, sorry! A few of us split up our lists of programs and called each individually to find out the requirements. We asked about # of LOR required, yes/no chairman's letter, MCAT, SAT (most laughed at this question), chief resident letter, etc...

just one more question while I'm here...since my home program doesn't have an ortho residency and most programs require a chairman's letter, will a surgery's chairman letter suffice instead? what did people with this problem last year end up doing? thanks...
