A lot of people are now starting to get rejections (sucky as it may be) - and it's making more than a few (including myself) a little nervous/edgy.

Being a numbers guy, I thought I'd post some stats, just to give an example of another applicant. Maybe others will follow suit.

Total Apps: 60
Programs that have sent out interviews that I applied to: 12
Interview offers: 3 (25%)
Rotations that count as interviews: 2
Total Interviews: 5
Rejections: 2 (Wake, Med Coll of GA)
-I'm a pretty average applicant

Randomly posting this kind of stuff might help keep us all on pace with where we're at - so people don't have to continually ask, "How am I doing?"

My waitlists are from the same 2. I think georgetown may be a mass email, but I think UNC is a "select few" (ie. probably 250 people

My rejection from UNC had no mention of being on a wait list, so they may have an actual wait list that they plan to dip into.

Did you apply to that many programs out of fear or did someone tell you that people with your board scores should apply to that many? Holy shit.

...and one of the first things people have asked me at away rotations, when getting LORs, etc was 1) whats your step 1 score 2)whats your class rank and 3) are you AOA.

Hmm... AOA here is more about academic accomplishment. Oh well.

Yep, hard to tell if AOA makes a difference or if it's the fact people with AOA tend to have better grades that makes the difference.

Then again, at my med school graduation none of the AOA people made final academic honors, so who knows?

In either case, more people who match have AOA compared to those that don't match, for whatever it's worth.

Like I said before, I think it would be more rewarding trying to figure out the meaning of life than why some people match and others don't.

I don't think AOA is as much of a deal breaker as people make it out to be. As a matter of fact, no one from my school going into surgery got it bc most of the hardcore applicants spend their down time doing research and not as much volunteering, which is more heavily favored in the selection process.

It really depends who you ask.

You ask the middle tier to bottom tier programs and they say things like what CalinNhobbes said. I spoke with some very top tier programs and some literally told me "You have great scores i wonder why we didnt interview you... ohhhhh you aren't AOA, thats why"

The reality is that 90 percent of ortho applicants are outstanding. Most of us are outstanding in the same ways. The politics and who you know really plays a big part in the process. Think about it, if there's one hundred 240+ step score kids who all have honors and some research, you as a program director will probably lean towards the guy with a sincere great recommendation or even better a phone call that tells you that the attendings he works with really care so much that they match that they would take time out of their day to help them match.

I get the feeling that the feedback after not matching is always pretty vague because most of us dont have a great reason for denial, its just we were edged out by someone who had a little bit extra.

You mean besides not enough spots for all the amazing applicants who want to do ortho?

I got the, "bad luck, fell through the crack, you should have matched" speech mostly.

Was basically told there was nothing I could do to improve my application numerically. I needed to work on the politics of it all, ie. getting people who would be advocates to write letters and make phone calls, making connections, showing my commitment and interest, following up with programs after interviews, etc.

I basically got the feeling after getting some feedback that I missed matching at several programs by one or two spots, basically because everyone figured I was going to go some where else.
