WTF? Schedule the interview and cancel if something better comes up. F'em if they can't deal with a little rejection.

I just turned down my Downstate interview. Maybe you'll get it. Good luck!

That was so painful to turn it down, since I have nothing else scheduled on the date, but their email is adament if you're not 100% sure about attending the interview, don't RSVP.

I regret that we are not able to extend an invitation to interview at this
time. Unfortunately, there were many excellent ERAS applications, with too
few spots to fill. We hope for you the best of luck as you enjoy the
interview trail this fall and best wishes for your future career. Kind

It's a mess if you think about it, and I don't really know what is statistically significant out there... However I would imagine that it just feels kinda "rough" to have an extremely strong application and end-up with 1,2 or even 0 interviews... Stats are a third person's view -- when it's YOU, it's always 100%!

I know about someone who applied once, then did 1 yr of preliminary, reapplied, did not get a spot, then went on to do research and applied again, got rejected but was extremely lucky to finally get into one of the 2 unmatched positions -- btw a great program!

Everything is possible, so perhaps we should: 1) Pray and 2) go on with our blubbering, humor and self-sarcasm for right now -- I'll keep updating regarding my many upcoming rejections -- 23 so far + 2 interviews

I have gotten rejected by 11 places.. but I have 10 interviews.. so I'm waiting to hear from another 40 some odd places.

Yes, it is very random. Think about it. About 500-600 apps apply to each program..they have to sift through all of them.. do you think they can possibly "equally" weigh these?

There's about 650 ortho spots in the country, approximately 60 interviews per spot. (Some places are more, some are less.)

About 1000 people apply...

How many programs does each candidate apply for? 40, 50, 60?? Let's say 50..

That's 50000 applications out there. Interesting.. that doesn't cover the applicant pool, now does it

If only we were smart and applied to less ortho programs. Poor program directors!

That's 39000 interviews going on.. wow, that's a lot of bull shit talk going on.. haha..

So, if everyone was equal, all you'd get is .78 interviews

So.. if you think about it.. all of those folks whom take about 20 interviews or so.. take away from others.

Even if you chop off the bottom 50% of the applicant pool (because they're junky candidates) which is a highly aggressive thing to do:
39k interviews / 25k apps.. that works out to be 1.56 interviews each..

Wow.. where do you fall? Say the top 10%, okay, let's look at that:
39k in / 5k apps = 7.8 interviews / applicant.

Well that's scary.

Anybody else really upset with the amount of rejections floating around. I felt like I had a really good application and I am still getting hammered. I had better scores, more research, and additional degrees, than my classmates two years ago and I am getting rejected from programs with which they all had interviews. Tough year for ortho
