I always found these threads interesting and informative and it will help us kill some of the time until match day...
1. Campbell Clinic - didn't rotate here but was blown away on my interview day. Cool residents, unmatched operative experience (trauma experience unbelievable), big names on staff. Trauma seemed rough, but life on other rotations not so bad. Increasing research support. This is one of the top tier placed that truly lives up to the hype and has it all. Memphis doesn't seem as bad as some make it out to be.
2. Mayo - what can you say... its the mayo clinic. opportunities are endless. Rochester would be good for my family.
3. University of Washington - rotated here and loved it. very well balanced program with great operative experience (although slightly back-loaded). big names in every subspecialty
4. Iowa - impressive on interview day. well balanced and very academic. good group of residents.
5. Vanderbilt - rotated here and would have been higher if not for the recent instability. great group of residents
6. Florida - jumped way up on my list after interview day. Scarborough is a class act. just not sure i want to live in the deep south.
7. University of Wisconsin - madison wi is one of my favorite cities. great spine here.
8. UTSW - great operative experience. trauma dominated.
I did not like the idea of spending intern year away from 8 out of the 12 interns. It also seemed so big that quality and consistency of resident education might suffer. I'm sure it is a great program but it is a little big for me. I was looking for a more personal experience where the focus of the program is resident education and there is earlier and more extensive operative experience.
I'll throw my hat in. I Applied to 48 programs, was offered 26 interviews, and went on 16. I applied everywhere except for Texas and NY.
1. Utah- Excellent program with outstanding leadership and well-rounded faculty. Very active in research. Focused on resident education. Excellent international opportunities in the works. I could not find a weakness with this program. SLC is awesome.
2. Vermont- This program exists for the education of their residents. Very close faculty and residents that are committed to teaching and learning orthopaedics. Burlington is an amazing town with ample outdoor activities. You just have to watch out for frostbite up on the mtns...
3. CMC- Major operative experience with only 3 residents/yr covering all of Charlotte. The faculty seemed interested in education. All rotations were preceptorships.
4. Wash U- What can I say...amazing, amazing, amazing academic institution and the program lives up to its reputation. Extremely deep faculty. Great group of residents and excellent international opportunities.
