Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Chairman is a well known and expert knee surgeon. 90% of the attendings are top notch and excellent surgeons. The sports attendings have connections throughout the country, and the trauma guys are about as good as it gets. Pediatrics is amongst the best in the country as well. Program director is extremely approachable and a big resident advocate.
Didactics / Teaching
Weekly conferences included grand rounds and didactic lectures. Very evidence based treatment recommendations. Monthly journal club has a high participation rate.
Operating Experience
About as good as it gets. I rotated and interviewed at many places. I haven't been anywhere where the residents got as good of a balance between supervision and autonomy.
Clinic Experience
Plenty of clinic patients to see. Facilities will be upgraded soon.
Research Opportunities
Dedicated research rotation your 2nd year. Not known as a research powerhouse, and only one project is required, but there are opportunities throughout your residency if you are interested. Paid travel, lodging, and registration to present your research.
Residents
One of the best parts of this program - very close knit group. Mix of single and married, some with kids. Spend a lot of time together at work and still spend a significant amount of time together outside of work. Lots of support and helping each other out with clinical duties.
Lifestyle
Not a lifestyle specialty or residency. Not terrible though and plenty of residents have time for their spouse, kids, outside interests, etc. Lifestyle is improving with the addition of an extra resident in each class.
Location / Housing
Lexington is a great place to live. Has the downtown/nightlife scene but also has beautiful countryside and plenty of outdoor activities. Not to expensive to live here.
Limitations
Hand/upper extremity is weak, but improving. Several residents have recently landed nice hand fellowships.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Solid place. Traditionally known as a working class program but has been solidifying its research and didactic components. Excellent operative experience, nice state of the art hospital, and good city to live in. High level of camaraderie among residents.
