Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Well balanced staff with all sub specialties covered by more than one attending. Not sure about below review, doesn’t seem like they rotated or had any direct experience with program. Faculty perform high volume of surgeries in most fields. Broad range of settings from major level I trauma center, ambulatory surgery center, and high volume community hospital. Many faculty active in national organizations and leadership.
Didactics / Teaching
Weekly didactics in each specialty, protected time for residents. Curriculum was updated based on resident suggestions.
Operating Experience
High volume trauma center that provides great opportunity for hands on resident training. Graduated operative experience and not a lot of fellows so residents get excellent opportunities especially pgy 3-5 years.
Clinic Experience
Attending clinics are attended on each service at least once per week. Allow residents to see patients on their own and present to attending.
Research Opportunities
Excellent research opportunity
It’s, one of the highest funding rates in orthopedics for the basic science. Also good clinical research available for interested residents.
Residents
Residents seem to get along and are friendly with one another. Socialize frequently outside of work. Rochester is smaller town so more close knit residency group.
Lifestyle
Trauma services are busy but residency is receptive to resident suggestions for improvements. Minimal driving. Good PA support on elective rotations allowing residents to focus on operating.
Location / Housing
Low cost of living so good lifestyle, many residents buy a home, suburban living with nice suburbs. Finger lakes region beautiful with easy access to skiing, golf, boating. Major cities within 5 hour drive include New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, cleaveland, Boston for weekend getaways.
Limitations
Overall well balanced program covering all subspecialties, excellent research opportunities for those interested.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Overall well balanced program excellent clinical and research opportunities.
