Columbia University is one of 10 schools participating as a Beta-test site for a new AAMC program called VSAS (visiting student application service) which allows students to apply for their visiting rotations on-line. It was a bit delayed from its intended launch but is now fully functional and seems to be working well. It allows students to apply to any of the orthopaedic surgery electives and put them in rank order of choice as well as preferred months. I receive many queries about the timing of these electives since many of your schools go by differnent schedules compared to Columbia - we are always able to accommodate different schedules so if you're interested in rotating this will not be a problem.

Good luck to all the rising 4th year students as they get ready to start the journey toward obtaining orthopaedic residency positions!

Does this apply to the St. Luke's rotations as well? I applied for a month, and was under the impression that there was no flexibility, so I just decided I would have to use one of my "off" months of fourth year to cover the extra time...I submitted my app already - do I just email the coordinator and ask for a different time slot? Thanks for your help.

Point of clarification: We (Columbia Orthopaedics) are completely separate and have no affiliation with St. Luke's Orthopaedics program - since they are a "sponsored" hospital of Columbia University, however, they are also part of the Beta-test site. So if you have applied specifically to St. Luke's you would need to speak to their academic coordinator to determine schedule flexibility.
I hope this clarifies your question -

As a frustrated user of the VSAS system....(I had already been approved for two aways from the departments prior to the VSAS launch date), is their a mechanism within VSAS to choose a rotation block off of the host school's academic calendar? I have found that to not be the case.

At least with Columbia we have always encouraged students to speak directly with us and have been able to accommodate the myriad different schedules around the country. I'd encourage you to speak to the programs in which you're interested and hopefully they can accommodate your schedule.

good luck
