I am strongly considering an away rotation at UPENN at the start of my MSIV year. Before I decide for sure though, I was hoping to get some thoughts on the program. I've read all the old posts and it seems pretty great there. The only concern I have is one of my attendings said they have had a bit of an exodus of faculty recently. Any thoughts or opinions would be great, especially from current residents or students who have interviewed there. Lets really try to keep clear of turning this into a Jeff vs Penn thread. Thanks. Best of luck to all you 4th years.

I interviewed there and absolutely loved it. If not for the fact that I really don't like Philadelphia it would have been my number 1. Great reputation, great faculty, and though a couple people recently left, it is such a prestigious place that they won't ever have trouble recruiting replacements. Most importantly to me, the camaraderie amongst the residents was outstanding...they all seemed to get along fantastically both in and out of the hospital, and definitely had each others backs. Though a large program with 8 per year, they were a tight nit group.

I'll echo linebacker's comments, with the exception that I actually like philly a lot. I loved penn when I interviewed and ranked them very highly. good place to do an away, I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies. Is there any particular service you recommend for an away? I was thinking ortho onc with Lackman. I've heard good things about the Peds and Sports services too. Thoughts?

I'm a 4th year at Penn right now and, like everyone else who posted, think Penn is a fantastic program. If it was in any city other than Philly, it would have been my number 1.

I did a ton of different rotations here and thought they were all great. One of the best for an away rotator, though, is probably the combined Neuro-ortho/Sports rotation. Not only is it a great chance to see procedures you will not see very often (at least on the Neuro-Ortho side) like Girdlestones, SPLATTs, etc., but both attendings you will work with (Keenan and Sennett) are top-ranking members of the Executive Committee (i.e. the people that make the rank list). That said, Keenan pimps a LOT on anatomy, so make sure you know your stuff before you start.

The tumor rotation is also good--awesome cases!--but, at least from my experience, you will get only a limited amount of face time with Lackman.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM!
