do you have anything set up for next year? If not you need to find something, either a prelim spot or a research gig, immediately. I'd recommend research, considering the year is easier and you don't have any research on your CV currently. Good prelim and research spots are gobbled up quickly, and honestly they are probably already all gone.

Your med school office should let you view your application packet if you didn't match. You need to review your dean's letter and LORs. I wouldn't be shocked if there was a red flag in there that scared off potential programs (however considering how many interviews you got...doesn't make a lot of sense). Lastly, I would disagree with the above post about research. Your application is already rock solid strong to get into a decent program. It is highly possible to match without research, and doing a prelim year will open you up to applying to potential 2nd year spots which do frequently open up. That's just my personal opinion and there are still many applicants that do the research track and find spots. That said the scramble has already taken place, but there are usually still plenty of prelim spots available. However trop2019 is correct, many of the good spots are already gone.

Also, attending 24 interviews is borderline impossible. I'm not saying your lying, I just noticed on another thread you posted you had 18 interviews...regardless, this happens every year to applicants with very strong applications. It may be a personality quirk that you have that turned a lot of people off. You need to make an honest evaluation of how you come across when you meet people. Hope this helps.

I'm nowhere near as competitive as you in terms of number and whatnot but maybe this had something to do with your interviews. As someone else pointed out, that is definitely a lot of interviews. There may be something you consistently said/did while interviewing that turned people off. Maybe you could see if there are any mock interview services at your school (at large, i.e. maybe in the business school) that you could get feedback from. Just a suggestion

Yeah, I'd definitely do the mock interview to make sure that you're not sending out any bad signals during the interview. Preferably with an orthopaedic surgery mentor. Also, contact some of the programs that you interviewed at to make sure that there weren't any red flags in your application or interviews.

Hey I am in the same situation. I have a 270, junior AOA, 20 publications in JBJS and recommendation letters from top 3 ortho attending in the country. I had 60 interview invites, went on 20, ranked 18, and did not match.

Maybe they got confused and put your application with those applying for faculty positions!

Orthopleasematch = shockposter. How come in ur earlier posts you have a 250 and now it's a 270. 20 pubs specifically in JBJS. Come on sorry bro I find that hard to believe for a student.

Another great point above is just personality. I'm not saying someone with a 270 and 20+ JBJS publications has a bad personality...it's just your social skills may not be as up to par as you think they are. If you are half as confident or cocky with your stats as I would be, I'm sure some programs were turned off. Other non-elitist programs were probably thinking there is no way this guy will come here.

As ortho gets more and more competitive (and it seems like it gets worse every year), a "normal" guy with a 240 that goes out, drinks, socializes, etc is often worth far more (to the residents, maybe not the faculty) than a heavily introverted personality that spends spare time doing research/studying all of the time. This is in no way meant as an insult, its just emphasizing how important it is to interact well with a group of people (which is often mutually exclusive with an extremely highly educated and motivated individual). It is almost as if you are too far right on the bell curve.

Did you guys do second looks? I was so shot by the end of interviews, I refused to do a second look and it definitely hurt me in the match.

the program coordinator or PD may not have time or inclination to tell you the issue, but if it's a personality/interview style thing, you might try contacting the residents at a couple of places. i know we give the contact info for all our peeps and welcome questions from applicants. even in a small program like we are, we interview 40-50 for our 2 spots... and although many run together, the really great and the really douche stand out. not saying you're one of them, but it might help to know if you are so you can fix it for next time. because there HAS to be something to have crazy stats and no one picked you up. match anomalies do happen, but the other is far more common.
good luck.

oh, and i'm on the prelim side (see multiple posts from several years ago). my prelim year allowed me to slide into a 2 spot with minimal pain, and i'm cruising into the home stretch to begin 5th year now. research is fine, but i'd rather practice being any surgeon than no surgeon at all.
cheers

hmmm sometimes match flukes do happen

We all have personality flaws in some way shape or fashion.. I know I do, for sure..

But, my personality flaws don't easily come out in interviews, I have been told. The truth is, match flukes do happen.. why? because you weren't a match.. no one thought you were too spectacular.

I fought the problem of being a person with good stats, and a not so good med school.. I was an inbetweener. So, the places that gave me great interviews, were not going to take me because I didn't have the pedegree, and the 'lesser' places didn't rank me as highly b/c they didn't think I would go there. Plain and simple. This happens more often than you can imagine.

I matched at a place that I applied to/interviewed last year.. So what does that tell you?? Obviously they liked me enough to rank me high enough to match.. so, last year, they didn't like me? Nope.. just for whatever reasons, this year, they ranked me higher. This year I had a champion, someone to speak up for me, I interviewed with people who I meshed well with.. That I can tell you. But, I can also tell you that I interviewed well at other places too.. so ugh.. who knows.. But again, my point is, here I matched at a place that I applied to last time..just for whatever reason, I was more appealing to them. Maybe other people were 'less' appealing.. or maybe this time I caught their eye.. you don't know.

BUT, I will bet you dollars to donuts, that if I ask my PD why I didn't match there last year, they will tell me they didn't remember me

So, if you have personality flaws.. work on them.. but, don't beat yourself up about it, because everyone does. But, also accept that you might not have matched simply b/c there was no match in the process of interviews that you underwent.

Just remember how random the interviews were that you got..and it will all become clear!
