Looking for places to do away ortho electives. Any residents at, or students who've rotated at George Washington, Georgetown, Case Western, Ohio State, UVA or Pitt out there? Any comments about their programs or experiences during rotations? Thanks for any information.

There's a lot of info on Case on this website. I'm a student there, and I think Case is a great program. This year the 1 month rotation consisted of 1 week on sports, 1 week on joints, and 2 weeks on trauma. Sports and joints are at UH which is our private hospital. Your schedule will be reasonable - in at around 6-30 for sports, earlier on joints for prerounding to help the team. Done probably by 5 or 6, sometimes earlier (but there's usually cases going later if you want to stay and help). Most students take call about once a week when at UH, and it is not too bad (level 2 ER). Trauma is at Metro, our county hospital. You'll take Q3-4 call which is a lot of fun and you probably won't sleep. But you'll probably be able to go home early the next day. You'll also spend 1-2 days in clinic there, which is a good experience because you'll see patients and present directly to the chief resident.

Overally you'll have a good experience. Residents and attendings are student friendly, and you'll learn and have fun. I do believe that all rotators get interviews, although I'm not 100% positive.

If you have any more questions PM me.

As an Ohio State resident and former "Eer medical student I can answer some about OSU. I did an away rotation here as a 4th year med student and really liked the place. Good mix of trauma and general. It is a level I hospital so you get plenty of trauma work, but it isn't so trauma heavy that every night you're in the OR. We get our share but far from some places where they are nailing 6 femurs a night. The city is nice, big city activities without big city traffic and problems. It's a very suburban kind-of place. Most rotations are 1-1 with attendings which means you are automatically first assist starting as a second year. If I can help more let me know.
