Outside of AOA vs/ non-AOA, does class rank matter as reported on MSPE?

I.e. how important is it to be in the top 1/2 or top 1/4? My program adviser told us that class rank didn't matter at all, but somehow this seems hard to believe?

It definitely helps if you are ranked highly. Everywhere I went commented on my class rank.

yes, it matters.

If you pulled a 245+, but are ranked in the bottom 50% of your class, that will be viewed negatively. They have plenty of people with your Step scores who did well the entire 3+ years.

How could class rank not matter at all? Of course it does.
Ortho programs get to choose from the best of the best. Sure, some residents were in the bottom half of their med school class, but that would certainly be the exception rather than the rule. I've been told that most residents were at least in the top quartile of their class.
