I'm a third year whio is going to be applying ortho. Unfortunatley I'm not all that competitive. All S's 1st 2 years, no research, clinical grades are S, S, HS, HS, and H, currently on medicine hoping to get that last H. My board score is great at 244 which hopefully will get me looked at. While I'm going to look into any current projects at my school and kill on my aways, I have to be honest about the possibility of not matching. I was thinking about research at first, but that seems like a "who do you know" sort of thing. I was also thinking about a prelim in surgery. Basically my question is, does anyone know how likely it is that someone who's trying to do orthopedics, who's doing a prelim, gets an ortho residency the next year?

If you search this board, you can find this topic covered in great detail already. Plus, I wouldn't say that you are not competitive with those scores. Concentrate on kicking butt for the next six months and then start thinking about research or prelims if you have trouble getting interviews for some reason.
