Hey ladies and gents-
I'd like to get some advice, hopefully others can learn from this also.
I am not interested in program rankings, but am looking for MY best program to do my second away in Nov/Dec. Today I thought I'd write down what I would value in a residency and hopefully get pointed in the direction of some programs you feel would best fit what I'm looking for: Here we go-

#1 well balanced program- including good peds, tumor, spine, trauma etc. "Good" meaning multiple attendings in each subspec. and not extensive travel for subspec (attendings are less invested in your education if at an away institution for subspecialty training)

#2 residents rep is hard working and happy- can't stress this enough, I don't care about call schedules- we're hopefully doing what we love, right?

#3 geography- in a city (smallest being say Salt Lake), interested in Northeast and Chicago, then West coast, and the south and midwest

#4 possibility to be involved in research with motivated mentors and resources- not absolutely necessary but would be nice.

Who I am: So Cal raised, So Cal undergrad, So Cal med school, Step 1 241, AOA-nope, clinical honors- 1/6, research- decent I guess, fun easy going guy, works hard, realistic- know I'm not HSS bound. Rotating thru chicago and looking for the second away.

Thanks for your thoughts my friends...

Penn might be a good choice; did not rotate at the program myself but have heard very good things about it and the residents. Also, it is research oriented (they have 6yr track too), and they have CHOP for peds, good tumor exposure. Good luck!

Look into University fo Wisconsin. This is a great program and they have basically everything you're looking for. Very laid back group of residents, multiple specialists in all fields and no away rotations. Overall, an extremely well rounded program and only 2.5 hrs from Chi-town!

I love this post because i sound almost exactly like the original poster dude, except i'm from the east coast. dude, i would be interested to find out which programs you end up liking. i would agree with the previous post of Penn. supposedly they are into finding, and keeping, happy residents. i will not be applying for another year so i can't offer much else just yet.
