Looking for thoughtful programs for sub-210 Step 1

There are many programs out there that pick most of their residents from rotators. You might want to focus your energy on those such as UT-southwestern in dallas, USC, etc. With your pubs and research, just kick but on your aways and you will be fine. Good luck

I would not recommend checking out UTSW. The odds that you get in with that score even if you rotate are extremely low. It is very competitive.

Your best chance would be at the program where your co-authors and co-investigators reside. Many programs will screen you out because of the step one score. On the other hand many programs automatically interview all rotators, not that they all have a good chance of matching. i believe that your best chance would be where your advocates are, i.e. co-authors, co-investigators.

I am in basically the same boat as hopeful4ortho.

I too would be willing to go anywhere, but I am currently at midwestern university (with a top ten reputation in ortho, if that matters) and I would ideally like to stay in the midwest, which seems to be a less desirable location from what I can guess. Does anyone know anything about programs in the midwest (specifically, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas City, St. Louis, Milwaukee) or anywhere else that would be perhaps less competitive places to do AI's and attempt to match?

Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know of anywhere in particular that has a rep for taking people with lower scores but other credentials. They probaly would not advertise it if they did.
Can you get in. Possibly. Is it gonna be an uphill battle. Probably, but that does not mean you should not try. There are always several stories on here each year of people that match with less than stellar scores.
The fact that you have some pubs and research will help. You are someone who should strongly consider taking step 2 and doing well on it. I would also check on any contacts your research mentors might have. Nothing is as good as word of mouth recommendations to open doors that are otherwise locked

Ohh, and when you say "below 210" does that mean 209 or 189?

Ya'll should take a look at Henry Ford in Detroit. My understanding is that it is a community program (fairly good) that has had some difficulty attracting residents.

No orthopaedic residency has trouble attracting residents.
