Anyone have any insight/experience with the program at Ohio State and/or Mt. Carmel? I haven't spoken to anyone with direct experience at either program but others (students/residents/faculty elsewhere) have not had glorifying remarks about either one.

Both programs have their strenghts and weaknesses. I'm a resident at OSU so I can speak most intelligently about my own program. I'm not sure about the remarks you refer to but I'll try to describe the program. OSU is a level 1 trauma center and is currently 1 of 4 hospitals in town you rotate through. OSU Main is where all the trauma, prison (actually a very good service run by senior resident) and tumor (2 ortho oncologists and a large cancer center keep this service busy) are done. The others are OSU East, currently don't cover the ER there, but that is looking to change at some point. It is where most of our elective spine, joints, and hand are done. Also spend 3rd year and part of chief year at Riverside Methodist hospital. Tons of operating and a very busy general ortho/hand ER, level 2 trauma center. Also spend 3 months as a 2 and 4 at Children's hospital, a level 1 childrens hospital servicing most of central ohio. Most rotations have 1 resident only (except trauma which has 2-3 depending on the time of year) so even as a 2nd year you are in the OR as first assistant. Call is from home at children's and then from 3rd year on. Night float system for 2nd years (in house with senior resident back up at home) at OSU main, currently done as 2 6-week long blocks starting at 5pm ending at 7am sunday through thursday. I feel we get a great operative experience and if I can answer more specific questions I will. We have been going through growing pains as we look to hire more faculty and have already applied and had our site visit to increase our residency to 6 per year from the current 4 per year. I hope this helps
