Howdy,

I am a 1st year student who is concerned about what to do this summer. I can choose between one of two options. First, I can do a "research" position at my medical school. It truly is not research because it basically is a less research and more retrospective on past procedures. I would also get some time to scrub in and get to know the program leaders at my school (or so I am told). However, I wouldn't be published and the program is not very well known. My second option is to take a very competitive position doing diabetes research which could deal with surgery and pathology (such as wound healing). I potentially could get published with this position albeit not in surgery or ortho. In excess to this position I could also shadow some ortho's in the area where this research postion is located. This latter position is with a top notch very well known medical institution. All in all, I guess this is a priorities question. Which summer position would be more favorable for me if that eras and interview time should come? Is one type of research seen as more favorable than another?

-Thanks

I wasn't originally interested in ortho when I first started med school. I was more interested in general surgery. The stuff I did during the summer of first year, wasn't really research either. I helped write a book chapter on the cardiovascular effects of pancreas transplantation. Not ortho. And it wasn't really surgery either because I spent most of the time working with a cardiologist. And the book wasn't even published until after match day. I obviously had it on my CV though. I would do whatever interests you more. If you want to do the diabetes stuff, do it. You can get a publication, and you still have time to do ortho research later. I didn't even start any ortho research until the end of third year, when I had finally decided to do ortho.

I waterskied and hung out on the beach all summer. This will be your last time ever with that amount of time off. You may want to enjoy it.

If you really want to boost your CV and you know you want ortho, maybe you should keep looking to find a good ortho research opportunity at a good program. It's only january, so there's plenty of time. Of course, if you think you'd reallly enjoy either of the other options, go for it. But, you can definitely find a bunch of places to take you for this summer. You could even apply for a grant, get funded, and get the award to put on your CV too.
