Hey everyone -

I was wondering if the experienced here could help me form a list of schools with a balance of the following two characteristics: Smallish metropolitan area and strong research. The two that really stick out for me are:

Mayo (Rochester, MN, pop < 110,000)
Iowa (Iowa City, IA, pop. < 75,000)

There are a couple of schools that might meet this criteria, but I am unaware/unfamiliar with of their specific research strengths. These include: Penn State; W. Virginia, Florida (Gainesville), Missouri (Columbia), Vermont and Virginia.

A couple more obvious research powerhouses, but I don't know if they count as having a smallish metropolitan area: Wisconsin, and U. Rochester

I know that there are many community programs that are in smaller metropolitans, but I am unaware of any more with strong research opportunities. By research, I am talking basic science/engineering musculoskeletal work

Does anyone have any others to add to the list?
