Noticed on the NRMP website that SUNY Downstate only has 5 spots this year. Anyone know if that is correct or what the story is there? I always thought Downstate took 6 each year: pretty sure that's what they said on interview day and that is also what the Downstate website says. Did they lose a spot or fill it outside the match?

They only have 5 spots because the sixth spot was pre-matched. They aren't downsizing.

I'm looking to do an away rotation in the NYC area and I was wondering if any of you know whether or not they interview all of their rotators and what proportion of their resident classes are former rotators? Any info would be helpful

I rotated there last year and got an interview - some of the residents said it was automatic for rotators. I know the PD likes rotators also.

I haven't seen any reviews on the program anywhere on the web (from residents or rotators). WOuld you care to elaborate on your experience? And maybe compare it to other programs you've seen? Thanks

My experience there was great. It was an early rotation and I was able to impress people at later rotations with the practical skills I got there. You will definitely work hard on the trauma service, but you also see a lot of complex cases (especially gun/knife club) that are interesting.

If you end up there, it probably makes the most sense to split your time between trauma and sports with the PD.

Pros:
Friendly program that treated me very well as a student
Lots of cases, students can always scrub and actually do things
Great ER experience when on call - I got a lot of practice splinting, bandaging, doing washouts, etc that made me look smart later

Cons:
Pretty long hours and more work than I had at other programs while rotating
Definitely my most expensive rotation because of the NYC cost of living
