I am currently a resident at Ohio State. I wanted to provide an update on our program as it has been undergoing significant change in the past several months.
Our previous chairman stepped down in February and we are currently in the process of recruiting a new chair. The university and department have been very active in this and are dedicated to finding the right person for the job. Things have not however stalled otherwise due to this. We have continued to hire several new faculty members with more on the way.

By specialty, we are generally well represented throughout. Our sports medicine department has grown significantly and is a strong point. Obviously they take care of all of the OSU teams. There are 2 fellows but with at least 4 attendings, they are not in the way of our education.
Our trauma department has 2 fellowship trained trauma surgeons and we get an great training with a very busy cold trauma service. We rarely operate much at night these days despite being a level I.
Hand just added a second attending with more in the works.
New Joint guy, also with a commitment from the U to add more.
Tumor is one of our strongest departments with a dedicated cancer hospital attached that should be doubling in size over the next couple of years. Dr. Mayerson is an outstanding teacher.
Our foot and ankle experience is with a private group in town who have an affiliation with the University and this is a great experience that gives us a great opportunity to learn the business side of things as well as clinical (for some reason we send a lot of people to foot and ankle fellowships).
Admittedly, spine may be one of our weeknesses.
Peds is done at columbus Childrens with several other residencies sending people there as well
We spend 18 mos at Riverside Hospital. There we get experience in Sports, Joints and general orthopaedics and also get the "opportunity" to work with 5 microvascular hand guys. They have a brand new multi-million dollar learning center with all sort of gadgets for us to play with.

Columbus is a nice, very easy place to live. most of our residents own houses and many have families and children and it seems to be no problem.

Admittedly we have been through significant change over the last several years and there were previously some questions of stability but right now things are on the right track. We were given 2 additional residents by the ACGME to make six total, with one being a 6 year research spot. Overall most people go into fellowships lately, but you could certainly leave and go right into practice.

If anyone has any questions about the program, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected].
