With the looming election of a democrat this election, it appears that socialized medicine (or an attempt to socialize medicine). Lets put that part of the argument aside for a moment.

What would this mean for orthopaedists? Traditionally, orthopods have been compensated for their long working hours; but when salaries are slashed, will we be overworked and (grossly) underpaid? It seems like plastics & dermatology (maybe some psychiatrists) are the only fields immune to the pay cuts. The day has come where many ortho equipment reps are making more than the surgeons installing it; but the question is how much lower will we go?

I love the field and nothing would make me choose another field of medicine, but I am curious to hear the thoughts of med students, residents, & attendings on this matter.

when reimbursements continue to decline, there will soon be even a bigger shortage of physicians. that may stack the deck in the favor of those who stick it out. this of course implies things are going to get a lot worse before they get any better which is how things will play out. just to be clear though, medicine is already socialized. its just not universal, which is what a lot of people mean when they say socialized. going universal might be an improvement.

just curious, how are psychiatrists immune to pay cuts? [/u]

I think we are a long ways away from socialized medicine. The billion dollar insurance companies won't stand for it.

I think/hope that components/implant costs are gonna be the next target. They have made out like bandits up to this point and get paid regardless of the hospital or physicians getting stiffed or fees slashed. i agree, it is criminal how much some reps make for doing virtually nothing, especially on expensive spine and arthroplasty components.
