I'm confused. In the HJD interview offer letter, there's a paragraph about the research fellowship, saying they've identified individuals who would be well-suited to interview for it. But they don't say whether or not I'm one of these people. Does everyone's letter say the same thing?

mine says the same bit about the research part. i also was expecting something more for them to say about it

also - does hjd do pre/post interview receptions? does anyone know if its day before or day of?

I don't know where the info is on FRIEDA and I don't know the exact number, because some interviews are conducted during away rotations, but Hawaii only interviews about 13.
