If you have a strong reason to want to match into a certain area, and your family is from that area too, is it still bad form to do all of your away electives at different hospitals that are in the same metro area? For example, if I was born and raised in New York city, would it make sense to do ALL of my aways in NY, or is it more smart to spread it out across the country? I just don't want to put all of my eggs into one basket, but then again, as I contemplate it more, I really would prefer to match into a certain area, but I would just prefer to match somewhere over not matching. So would concentrating my aways at DIFFERENT institutions in the same metropolitan area be a helpful, or would it hurt me?

I don't think its a bad idea at all. You want to do rotations at institutions you are serious about attending. Location ends up being a pretty factor in how people make their rank lists, so if you REALLY want to stay in NY, then chances are the top of your list will be full of NY programs. If that is the case then it is in your best interest to see as many NY programs as you can so you make the most informed decision when you fill out your rank list.

I also think being from NY opens up the New England region and there are a LOT of programs in that area.

Are your birthplace, undergrad, or med school outside the state of NY. I think they look at that when they are deciding if you would come to their region.
