If you have a strong reason to want to match into a certain area, and your family is from that area too, is it still bad form to do all of your away electives at different hospitals that are in the same metro area? For example, if I was born and raised in New York city, would it make sense to do ALL of my aways in NY, or is it more smart to spread it out across the country? I just don't want to put all of my eggs into one basket, but then again, as I contemplate it more, I really would prefer to match into a certain area, but I would just prefer to match somewhere over not matching. So would concentrating my aways at DIFFERENT institutions in the same metropolitan area be a helpful, or would it hurt me?
