One of the away rotations I'm applying to asked me for a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. I haven't done my home ortho rotation yet so I don't have any ortho faculty members who've observed me clinically. I think I'll have to go with a LOR from one of my third year clerkship preceptors. I was wondering, would it be better to go with someone from my surgery rotation? Or is there little advantage to a surgery letter vs. something else? I only ask because I had an attending during my Peds rotation who seemed to like me, but I didn't know if it would carry less weight for this sort of thing.

If it's for an away rotation, it's probably just a formality and won't get past the administrative secretary. Just get a letter, BUT try and get a good one from whomever will write it, because it might get stuffed in some file they start on you for when you apply to the residency program. For now though, it's probably just a formality.

Agreed. Also, there are a few programs out there that require a non-ortho letter (and I think there might still be a couple that need a non-surgery letter), so it's good to have some extra letters tucked away in your file in case you need them.

Yea, I used a family med attending for one of my away letters. Still waiting to hear back.... maybe I should have gotten an ortho letter
