but i guess you should first make sure what you want and then write emails to them, they are really busy, i have seen them work!!

hey i need some help regarding the research elective.. im a student from india, 2 nd yr 5 th sem,i mailed a professor in nyc, musculoskeleton research centre about coming and doing a research elective under him and got a positive response.. as im from india it will cost a lot for me to go and do a research elective their.. so i want to know will it be helpfull when i apply for residency, and after that experience will have more knowledge so that i cam do research in my home school.. im planning to do clinical elective once im eligible later on... advice plz

definitely agree with last post; doing a project at home will go a long way... and those grants can also be used to fund projects at your home institution as well!

i would consider research projects at your home institution before a summer one. summer ones woudl be great for getting a letter and starting some projects, but if you cant continmue the work after the summer is over, you won't get much in the way of actual publications. even if the attendings arent as big name as some of the established academic programs, starting projects at your home institution that you can continue on throughout your remaining med school years will provide much higher yield. an impersonal letter from an attending at a big name place who knew you for a summer after your first year of med school wont go all that far, in my opinion anyway

If you have a mentor, the OREF usually has a fellowship grant you can apply for, but of last year, it was not yet available. Another great resource (especially if you have a mentor with a project in place) is to see if your own home program has set aside NIH funding for summer research or by contacting your local Arthritis Foundation for available summer research fellowships. It is limited but I know that the NYC AF chapter usually has a couple $2500 fellowship grants set aside for summer fellows.

I am finishing up a summer with the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education (SCORE) at Scripps Institute in La Jolla, CA. I got to be involved in multiple projects and have learned so much, and it has been a ton of fun as well! I already knew someone there and had an "in", but there were a handful of other students there for the summer as well, so surely it's possible to get involved with them.

I take it you are asking for next summer's purposes, yes?
