I have submitted my applications but I was considering going back and personalizing some of my personal statements to programs that I have family close by so that they know I have a connection to the area. Is this just a waste of my time?

Nope... I think personalized PS that target your area of interest and the reasons for wanting to be in that programs is one of the smartest things you can do. I had about 10 PS uploaded to ERAS by the time I was done. Some were regional, some were program specific. I can tell you that it definitely may my interviews more personal than if I had used a generic personal statement everywhere. It probably also helped me get interviews that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten. Programs are always looking for ways to separate out otherwise equal candidates.
