Mayo Clinic FL - Orthopedic Surgery Research Temporary Professional
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic Florida is pleased to offer a comprehensive, unpaid, one-year clinical research experience starting in May/June of 2026. This opportunity is designed for highly motivated 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-year medical students, or unmatched medical graduates, seeking to strengthen their applications for orthopedic surgery residency.Participants will engage in intensive research within our highly active divisions, with a primary focus on:
  • Adult Reconstruction
  • Shoulder and Elbow
  • Foot and Ankle
This immersive experience is anticipated to yield 10-20 publications and presentations, providing a substantial foundation for academic advancement. Proficiency in basic statistics is preferred but not required. Participants will gain hands-on experience in:
  • Project design and development
  • Comprehensive scientific literature review
  • Rigorous data collection and analysis
  • Expert manuscript preparation and submission
  • Presentation creation and delivery.
For medical students with active student status, this experience will include the valuable opportunity to scrub into surgical procedures, enhancing their clinical understanding. Furthermore, participants will receive an equivalent of a highly valuable away rotation experience. In addition, participants will gain 2-3 months of clinical experience rotating with various members of our selection committee, allowing for valuable networking and observation.Those who retain medical student status are still able to access financial aid for living expenses during this research year experience.This program offers a unique blend of research and clinical exposure, mirroring the benefits of a dedicated away rotation. Participants will benefit from:
  • Direct mentorship from experienced orthopedic surgeons and researchers.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge research methodologies.
  • Development of essential skills for a successful orthopedic surgery career.
  • Increased networking opportunities with members of the orthopedic surgery department.
