I am very disappointed at this point in the application process. I have received only 8 interview offers. I felt I had a very strong application as well. I had a 246 step 1 with multiple honors on my transcript, not AOA but top 1/3 of my class. I have a masterâs degree, five publications, and multiple posters presentations; some of my research was with NASA and the space program. All of my letters were very strong according to my deanâs office, and my deanâs letter was very good. I am sorry for the sob story but I just am very disappointed and confused and wondering why I was placed in the no interview pile by so many programs. Thank you very much for any input sir.
524 applicants this year
150 (roughly) with >240 on USLME 1
Majority with publications and research
Many AOA
Majority with strong letters of recommendations
It's simply a matter of numbers. ERAS has allowed everyone to apply everywhere even if they're not really interested in a program. This "clogs" the system therefore with applicants who may have no desire to come to the Northeast, for example, but for the ease in clicking the button on ERAS (and paying a few more dollars of course!).
We interview 55 people for our 6 spots. That means an incredibly large number of unbelievably qualified applicants can simply not be granted an interview for our program. I don't say that to be patronizing (nor do any other programs for that matter!) - it's just true. We know fully well that there are many people who will be fantastic residents and orthopaedic surgeons who we will never even see in the process.
8 interviews may seem like too few for you although there are still programs who have not given out their interview invitations as of yet. On the other hand, as I tell our Columbia students all the time - you only need 1 spot to match to. As for the 8 interviews you have, proceed with 100% enthusiasm and passion at each and you should achieve your desired goal - to become an orthopaedic surgeon!
