Many orthpaedic residency programs require a Chairman's Letter from your home Orthopaedic Department. I am at a big midwest medical school, but at a smaller clinical campus where we do not have a Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. We rotate with the clinically affiliated orthopaedic surgeons in town. I was wondering what you suggest for that letter? Should I obtain a letter from the Chairman of Department of Surgery, because our orthopaedic rotations are scheduled via the Department of Surgery? I will obviously be obtaining a letter from the orthopaedic surgeon I worked with, but that would not count as the Chairman's letter, right?

I was in the same boat. I submitted my Chair of Gen Surg Letter for my Ortho Chair letter. He made it clear that there was no Ortho department. I don't remember which programs specifically stated they need a chairmans letter and/or if I received an interview invite. I don't know if it hurt me or not.
