Is it necessary to do a rotation at your home program?

Dr. Levine,

If I am an 'average' ortho applicant and realistically do not have a shot at my home program (HSS), should I still do a rotation there? I was planning on getting my letters from my away rotations and not doing a home rotation.

There are several students who have successfully matched in past years without this home rotation, but my dean suggested that it would look bad if I didn't have a letter from a surgeon at my home program.

What would you advise?

Thanks for the input.

Your Dean has given you sound advice - not sure about "past students" but it certainly would be concerning if you have no letters of support from your home program -
good luck!
