Since this website is anonymous why don't we let each other know which programs have contacted their top choices (or not top choices) so we know where we stand.

It's unfortunate that things like this have a way of happening in a system that's supposed to be fair to everyone involved. In another thread, I posted that while I had gotten some non-committal statements from a department chair via an e-mail correspondence, I, for one, am glad that no programs have deliberately contacted me and given me "a line." I think that the potential for events like this to change the non-biased nature of the match process (like the cases that we have mentioned above) can be both favorable and detrimental to a candidate. The fact that the latter can occur is enough to recognize the importance of the rules and regulations governing match violations.

In the waiting room during one of my interview sessions, a particular program's extension of a contract to an applicant outside of the match was discussed at length, and I have to admit, there was more than one person who felt, "Wow, he's so lucky." In reality, occurrences like those do nothing but hurt all of us in this fair and impartial system.

I'm both glad and sorry that people have heard from programs. On the one hand, I know that it can alleviate much anxiety about one's worth and value, and that of all of the hard work that undoubtedly went into getting this far. On the other hand, I hope that it is taken as just that, a "pat on the back," and not something to be acted upon. Rank programs as you would have should you never have heard from anyone, because unless they're handing you a contract to sign (which raises other issues), their words don't mean anything.

Same here about Campbell's. Apparently they are notorious for making this statement to many applicants. I know of at least 4 residents at other programs who were "promised" spots and matched elsewhere. One even cancelled interviews and didn't match. Not a good position to be in.

Know an ortho PGY-3 that got a "we really want you and you're ranked to match" call from Campbell and ended up matching at their #2. Don't mean to burst your bubble, but just emphasizing how little these statements (either committal or non-committal) may mean.

Did anyone hear from HJD for the regular 5 year track? How about Lenox Hill? They said they would be making phone calls, but I think they sent an email instead...

Anyone heard from Michigan? On interviews, they said several times that they don't contact appicants, but according to some people from last year they have made calls then. Just curious if their policy has changed...

don't let programs contacting (or not contacting you) affect your ROL. some programs only contact the # of spots they have (i.e. 5 spots, 5 calls) and no program is going to match their top 5. maybe you are ranked 6 or 9 or 15 and still have an excellent chance to match (even tough you didn't get a call). conversely, some programs call like 30 people, but traditionally only go to 20-25 on their ROL so you may get a call but who knows whether you are in the top 20 or ranked 30. having gone through this process last year, i have heard from quite a few who said they were contacted by a certain program, ranked them No. 1 and ended up somewhere else. yeah, it's nice to be contacted and feel wanted, but it should not affect your decision. rank where you want to go, not by who tells you they want you.

This year our program director is calling our TOP 20. One of the reasons he is calling is to get feedback from those candidates on our interview process. This is the first year he has made calls since I have been here.

Last year we did some calls (top 20 or so I think), they were split up between several attendings, I don't believe the PD made any of the calls. It's nice of Dr. Fu to call everyone, but I think that's fairly rare. I guess understandable that you want to torture yourselves to figure out who got calls from where (the only purpose is to slay yourself finding out that someone else got a call from a program you did not), but i think you guys/gals are masochists!
We rank every candidate we interview. But there is a line of demarcation if you will, that we feel confident we will not fall below.

First a disclaimer: Yes, I am a program director from a certified program, but I will speak in generalities about a system that is anything but standardized.

I have been watching this forum since it started. Just wanted to let you know the truth about call backs. They serve several functions but in general are frowned upon by the AAMC and all concerned parties. They are by no means illegal, unless you tell the applicant where you rank them or ask specifically where you rank us.

I do not know how UPITT works but I can guarantee that Dr. FU is not calling every interviewee. It is probably good business to call applicants you want to get, some of us still feel a little weird calling, it does not help the applicant in any way, but can help the program.

I AM NOT SAYING THAT PROGRAMS THAT CALL ARE BAD OR UNDERHANDED. THIS IS BUSINESS AND IN MANY WAYS IT SHOWS DEDICATION TO THEIR RESPECTIVE PROGRAMS.

But many programs look at their rank list (typically finalized on the last day of interviews) and contact those that are within their desired match range. What does that mean?

Interview 40 or so, rank 35 or so (that's right some applicants are so bad at the time of interview that we would rather scramble on matchday than match them.) The 'strongest' applicants are in the top 50% or less and your wish list is the first few applicants(=to your number of spots).

Bottom line: Every program has their own system, I estimate less than 50% call outside their number of applicants. The vast majority of programs match outside their top X (X=# of spots).

Hope this is helpful

I got a call from Dr. Fu- "We like you very much, hopefully, you will be in Pittsburgh next year."
I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything, but Dr. Fu, if you're out there- thanks!!!!
