A lot of people are now starting to get rejections (sucky as it may be) - and it's making more than a few (including myself) a little nervous/edgy.

Being a numbers guy, I thought I'd post some stats, just to give an example of another applicant. Maybe others will follow suit.

Total Apps: 60
Programs that have sent out interviews that I applied to: 12
Interview offers: 3 (25%)
Rotations that count as interviews: 2
Total Interviews: 5
Rejections: 2 (Wake, Med Coll of GA)
-I'm a pretty average applicant

Randomly posting this kind of stuff might help keep us all on pace with where we're at - so people don't have to continually ask, "How am I doing?"

Hey everyone,

Don't get down... It still very early in the game. I was a re-applicant last year and one of the best things i did the second time around was to NOT READ EVERYONE'S POSTS on orthogate... People fall into the trap of comparing themselves to others and really that has no point. People getting a lot of interviews like to post because it makes them feel good in the present, and those that don't have very many feel like crap. In the end, its out of your control so other than cause a lot of angst or give you a false sense of security, it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR YOU. I know people who had 3 interviews and matched and those with 17 who didn't (from both years).

So, use the threads to motive you to increase your chances (i.e. find out if the programs you've applied to have made contact, and if you havn't heard yay or nay, contact the program coordinator to see if "your application is complete" if there's anything missing or anything else they require) instead of comparing yourself with others...

I guess what i'm saying is, i don't really agree with the starting of this thread, and i initially wasn't going to post my stats, but as a motivation factor i'm gonna post my stats from last year and the year before:

Med School
Pre-clinical: few H's in first year, none in 2nd
Clinical: got a P in every single rotation i did 3rd year, H's in all ortho AIs and 4th year rotations
Step 1: 219
Step 2: 205
Research: 1 podium, 1 poster, 1 published abstract --> all first author
AOA: obviously not...

2007-2008
Applications: 130
Interviews: 8 (1 rotated at)

2008-2009 -> Research year (10-12 manuscripts, 5 already published, the rest just about on the way)
Applications: 145
Interviews: 8 (3 rotated at - 1 from prev year, 2 from current, 1 off the wait list a week before the interview was scheduled)

Needless to say, i'm currently matched at an excellent program and am happy to be pursuing the career of my dreams. Hopefully this will ease some people who are worried about their chances, because if i'm any indication, its that you can acheive your dreams, keep in mind it just may not be on YOUR timetable!!

I agree with the above. It’s still early in the game. I’m a re-applicant this year. At this point last year I only had 3 interview offers (and one was from my home program). I ended up with 12 offers. Sure, I didn’t match but I hope that this demonstrates that there are still offers coming. Don’t lose hope.

Thanks very much for posting that, both of you. I was beginning to freak out a bit - I started off strong, but have slowed down considerably since then and was beginning to wonder what was wrong...

I think I'm going to have to go with the guy above and lay off orthogate for a while... maybe

Just curious; how many interviews are you folks holding? Have you all noticed a pattern in the geographical distribution of your interviews?

So here it goes so far...

240+, not AOA, mostly H/HP, 2 research projects

9 interviews

I feel like the invites Ive gotten are very random. I've gotten rejections from less desirable program and invites from some "top tier."

29 offers, 8 cancellations

The pattern has been completely random. No rhyme or reason based on program reputation or geography.

5 grand, 10 grand, 20 grand, the cost doesn't really matter at this point as they are miniscule compared to the opportunity costs of not matching.

So far:

52 apps
27 interview offers (2 of which are from the waitlist)
4 cancellations (with several more to come)
5 rejections

Interviews are all across the board, with no focus on one region or another. This reflects how I rotated.

Congrats! I think you may have the best percentage of anyone having posted so far. Any insight into why you've had so much success?

Remember, not everyone is bragging about all their offers... It's just like playing cards- it's never good to A) show your cards, or B) count your chips at the table. Bad Karma

I always count my chips while gambling, I can't help it!

As of 12/1:

Step I 240+, Step II 250+
Not AOA, mix of H/HP
Applied to 55
Offered 13
Canceled 1
Rejected by more than offered at this point

This process is crazy. I've gotten straight rejections from "backups" and offered interviews at "long shots". I have no idea what to expect anymore.

Hopefully everything works out for everyone...

My intention is not to brag, and a bunch of interviews does not guarantee anything. I put up this information in accord with the title of the thread. I have neither "shown my cards" nor "counted my chips": I'm just trying to get through this like everyone else, nervous about what happens.
