1 Away

Just from my experience, I would try to do more than 1 if you can. I only did one, and I now regret it. I matched, and I am happy with where I matched, but it was not my number one choice. I am similar to you (not AOA, average step I), and I really feel like my app would have been much stronger with another letter from some stud at a high powered program. One thing I have learned from this process is that the most powerful weapon in your arsenal is the away rotation. Your goal in the next year is to not let yourself be limited in any way, and while doing only one away will not condemn you to scramble/prelim/research, it certainly could limit your competitiveness at some programs. Try as hard as you can to do two, work your tail off when you go, and make sure that you get a good letter out of each experience.

At any rate, you won't be the only one in the 1 away rotation boat. My school only allows 2 rotations in any given specialty during 4th year. So after the home sub-I, we can only do 1 away. And we still have people match into ortho every year, so it's not a complete disadvantage.

I was in your similar position last year. I was only able to do 1 away rotation for personal family reasons and I did it at a place that I knew I really wanted to go.

I ended up matching at my #1 ranked place, the place where I did my away sub-i. So it is possible.

However, not only are more away rotations better for your app, but it also helps YOU get a better feel for more places. The interview day alone is just not enough.

But in the end, only 1 away is not a deal breaker and is definitely doable if you have no other reasonable choice.
