Since 20% don't match in ortho, I was wondering if any of you are ranking General Surgery second. A fifth year GS resident at my school is going to do a hand fellowship (w/o plastics first) and I was thinking I could do that as a second option if I don't match ortho. I liked GS, but I like ortho better and I was hoping to rank Ortho 1st and GS 2nd.
Yes, I know that you're not as "prepared" for hand if you do GS, but I'd rather go ahead and start my residency, rather than hope I'll get in in the future into ortho. This is assuming I even match in GS, according to last year's nmrp, there was only 1 spot that went unfilled last year.
So the main question is: Did anyone rank GS 2nd, if so, how has that worked for or against you on your ortho and GS interviews? Also, how did you organize your fourth year?
