My med school limits us to doing one ortho away in addition to our ortho rotation at our home program. I have been accepted for an away at what I think will be my 1st choice due to it being in my home state, but they couldn't give me the date I wanted and scheduled me for late october to mid november. My question is: will it hurt me at interviews if I only have one ortho grade on my ERAS application since the grade from my away won't be in yet?

First of all, what do you mean that your med school limits you to one away? My school only gave us credit hours for one away in ortho (or any specialty), but we could do as many months as we wanted if we took less vacation time. Our total requirements for 4th year would have allowed for 2-3 months of vacation, so it was plenty easy to fit in an extra month of ortho if you really want to.

As far as a late grade, if you do end up only doing one away, I doubt the determination of whether or not you will be granted an interview will be based primarily on your away rotation grade. There is a lot of other stuff in your application that will determine your interview offers and you can submit your grade from your away as soon as you have it.

it might be more important that you have letters from different institutions, rather than their grades. i'd really try to work in another ortho rotation before october... talk to your dean to see if you can get two rotations or maybe see if the other program can squeeze you in earlier.

some of it also depends on the rest of your app. if you're a pretty solid applicant, i wouldn't worry about one late rotation too much.

I would be worried about getting a LOR from a late rotation. I would do your best to get another ortho rotation earlier in the year.
