BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS for away rotations

These books were the most helpful for me:

(1) Fundamentals of Orthopaedics by Miller - good overview of basic ortho stuff, bone growth/repair, etc.

(2) Netter's Concise Atlas of Orthopaedic Anatomy: a must have

(3) Surgical Exposures by Hoppenfeld: I just borrowed a copy and read over the approaches for cases the night before; I would not recommend studying from it.

I would also pick up a Handbook of Fractures by Koval.....its nice to have in your pocket for nights on call and to bone up on classifications....Miller's Review has a nice quick and dirty chapter on joints.....I would use Rockwood or Browner and Jupiter for my Trauma text.....you can look up and read the chapter on the fracture if you are gonna scrub the case....also OKU Trauma is nice for a concise look at some trauma stuff.....if your place is doing a ton of trauma...I like to look at Master Techniques:Fractures....will even show you how to drape and position....

Some of these might be kind of advanced but, the more indepth texts are awesome when compared...

Also dont forget to SKIM, only on big complex cases, Campbells Operative Orthopedics....this book rocks...

How about good books for pediatric othopaedics? I'm doing a month of peds ortho....

A GREAT resource for pediatric ortho is Rang’s Children’s Fractures, good basic book about pedi fractures. Mercer rangs origianal is fun too read, and simple. There is a revised edition of this book put out in 2005.
Mercer Rang also wrote a book entitled The Art and Practice of Children's Orthopaedics, very simple reading (not entirely accurate with treatments of today) and entertaining.


An AWESOME book for the OR is Atlas of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery by Morrissey. Great resource for relevant anatomy in the OR, its one of the best step by step books I own. A bit pricey for the med stud, but invaluable for the ortho resident doing his rotation.

Core Knowledge in Orthopedics: Pediatric Orthopaedics is a newer book by Dormans that covers just what is says!

Possibly a dumb question, but just to clarify: Is that the name of the book? "Basic orthopedic exams"?
