carolinas medical center?

I would say that this is not just one of the best community programs out there, but one of the best overall. It is a private, non-university hospital but they do tons of research in a lot of different areas and from what i have heard it is incredibly well rounded.
On that note, my understanding is that it is incredibly competitive to get in to as well.

i tried to set up an away rotation at cmc and they were full so if u want to rotate their i wouldn't wait to try to set it up.

I will contribute. I spent a month there as a PGY 4 away rotation last summer and matched there for a trauma fellowship starting 2007. During my month there I was very impressed with the facilities, faculty, and residents. Very down to earth, nice people all around. I believe they are also building a childrens hospital.
Charlotte also is a VERY nice city, more white collar than blue collar b/c of the large corporate america presense there (Bank of America and Wachovia are HQ'd there as well as some insurance co's) I actually met more people there (in my one month) from elsewhere (boston, NYC, Cali) than from north carolina, mostly b/c of all the people moving there for the big corporations. I am TOTALLY looking forward to spending a year of fellowship there both b/c of the city and the program. The three trauma guys there are all great to work with and there was a faculty-resident softball game at which I met a lot of the other staff who all seemed like good people. For a "community" program they have some big names as staff there too.

Thanks for the input! I'm only an MS2, so not applying for aways yet, but since everyone has interviews and match stuff fresh in their minds I figured it'd be a good time to get some advice!

BoneDoc, it's good to hear that you thought that CMC has great facilities-having done my undergrad in NC, I think that Charlotte as a city is awesome. Did you feel like the program is pretty strong in all areas, or are there particular things it's known for more than others?

Here's my two cents on CMC, I'm a 4th year med student.
1. I was very impressed with their program. It seemed solid all the way around. Lots of OR time and more research opportunities than most "academic programs", I definitely wouldn't think of it as a community program. Their program director, Dr. Frick, seemed like a great guy. My wife and I are from out west and so we ranked a couple programs in the west higher than CMC to be closer to family, otherwise it would have been number 1.
2. I didn't rotate there and I got an email from them saying I was in the top three on their rank list. So if they are telling the truth you don't have to rotate there to match. Still, if that is your top spot I would reccomend spending a month there.
